De tels troncs en descendant les fleuves à l'occasion d'une inondation par exemple peuvent naturellemment transporter des propagules de dizaines d'espèces de plantes et lichens, et des propagules de centaines d'espèces d'invertébrés et microorganismes sur des distances parfois importantes et jusqu'en mer. Noter les arbres qui sont déjà en train de pousser dans le bois en décomposition, profitant de l'humidité et de la lumière reflétée par l'eau. C'est ainsi aussi qu'on peut parfois trouver des arbres dont on ne comprend pas comment ils auraient pu germer ou s'enraciner sous l'eau.
