Summary

Description
English: Drawing showing the operation of an electrophorus, a simple manual electrostatic generator invented in 1762 by Swedish professor Johan Carl Wilcke. The electrophorus consists of a flat "cake" of dielectric material such as pitch or wax, and a metal plate with an insulated handle that sits on top of it. The cake is first charged by rubbing it with fur (right) and the plate is set on top of it. The charge of the cake causes the charges in the metal plate to separate due to electrostatic induction; if the cake is charged positively, the top of the plate aquires a positive charge and the bottom acquires a negative charge. Then the top of the plate is grounded by touching it with a finger (shown). The positive charges on top of the plate drain off to ground. Then the plate with its remaining negative charge is lifted off the cake.
