English: This is a quick montage of the Otto engines running at the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Union (WMSTR), in Rollag, Minnesota.
The little trip arm on end of each engine fires the spark plug, while the cams open and close the intake and exhaust valves. The spinning balls are the centrifugal governor and the camshaft is powered from gearing on the main crankshaft. These machines are designed to run at a constant speed and only use fuel when the engine RPM slows down. These engines on display are running unloaded and so the only operating resistance is from bearing friction and operating the valve train. |
