Summary

Description Woodcut of an early Oudin coil, a high voltage resonant transformer similar to a Tesla coil, invented by French physician Paul Marie Oudin around 1899 for use in medical electrotherapy. Components from the right: induction coil (black box), 2 Leyden jars, adjustable primary coil (small horizontal coil), resonator or secondary coil (vertical coil), and spark gap (on top of coil). In this early type the secondary coil was not magnetically coupled to the primary coil, just connected to a tap on the primary. The tap on the primary was adjusted until the primary circuit resonated at the same frequency as the secondary. In use, a wire from the high voltage terminal on the top of the secondary went to an electrode on a long insulated handle, which the doctor held to apply the high voltage streamer discharge to the patient's body. Caption read: "Isenthal-Oudin Resonator". Alterations to image: Rotated image 90° CW, cropped out caption, converted to 32 color PNG.
